Thomasville native and 1999 Thomasville High School graduate, Ashley Allen directed his St. Jude Pirate baseball team to the first round of the AHSAA State Playoffs this spring in only the second year of the programs' existence. The Pirates qualified for the playoffs after finishing as the runner-ups in 1A Area 5. Despite losing out to 1A Area 6 Champion Maplesville in the first round, Coach Allen is proud of his team's accomplishments and the milestone they set in making their first ever baseball playoff appearance. He is certain that his team next year and those in the future can use the success the 2008 team enjoyed as a foundation for good things to come.
Allen who is the son of the late Mrs. Coilet Garrett and the grandson of Mr. Henry L. and Mrs. Esmeraldo Smiley attributes a lot of his success in life and on the baseball diamond to his family and the teachers and coaches in the Thomasville City School System who had a profound influence on his life from an early age on through his adolescent years.
During his time at THS, Allen played baseball for both Coach Donnie Fendley and Coach Clint Anderson. After his graduation in 1999 he signed a scholarship with Faulkner State C. C. where he played two years before transferring to Alabama State University to complete his undergraduate degree and play his final two seasons of baseball.
