T'ville schools cut 17 jobs in budget crunch
By Arthur McLean Editor

Anticipating continued budget troubles from state and local sources, the Thomasville City School board eliminated 17 positions from its rolls last week.

Included in the cuts are a Spanish teacher at Thomasville High School, partial funding for a resource position, two sixth grade teaching positions at TMS a seventh grade math teacher position, six teaching positions at Thomasville Elementary, an instructional aide for P.E. and one other instructional aide position. The assistant principal position that was split between Thomasville High School and Thomasville Elementary School will also be eliminated.

"We're holding these positions open until we see how the new budget shakes out," said superintendent Vic Adkison of the positions that were eliminated. Adkison explained that the board is trying to stretch a shrinking amount of local revenue and that by eliminating these positions, he hoped to recreate some later that might be paid for with federal funding. The Spanish teaching position will be replaced through distance learning again next year.

The school board did vote to create a part-time assistant principal position at Thomasville High School and at Thomasville Elementary again and voted to have a parttime LPN at Thomasville Middle School.

But Adkison also said at least one more locally funded position needs to be eliminated to get the school system's budget where it will need to be to begin building up the state mandated one month's funding reserve.

Although the school system does not have final budget figures from the state Adkison said the school administration is operating from best estimates and indicators from the state to come up with some budget projections. Those projections show the school system needs to find $1.2 millions in savings to meet state budget requirements and live within the funding it expects to receive next year.

In addition to the positions that were eliminated, the following non-tenured employee contracts were not renewed: Robert Bradley - Career Tech (THS), Jennifer Crow - Spanish (THS), Jay Crabtree - Science (THS), Maxine Mosley - Child Nutrition Manager (THS), Adam Elliott - P.E./Coach (TMS), Sherry Brewer - Math (TMS), Danielle Pugh - Custodian (TMS), Donna Reid - clerical aide (TMS), Stacey Gilchrist - LPN (TMS), Amy Carlisle - Kindergarten Teacher (TES), Angilyn Dixon - First Grade teacher (TES), Rhonda Harris - Third Grade teacher (TES), Tara Wilson - Special Education teacher (TES), Stacey Lassiter - Child Nutrition Worker (TES), Mary Baskin - bus driver, and HIPPY Program employees Jennifer Agee, Valarie Hunt, Ann Latham, Stephanie Newton, Johnnie Raine and Jane Sellers.

Adkison said the HIPPY trainers change so frequently that paperwork has become an issue for the school system and that he hopes for the next year, the school will be able to pass the grant funding directly on to the program itself.

In other business, the school board: approved restructuring the pay schedule for teacher/coaches with dual sport duties. The change does not affect how much they are paid, but changes their contracts from 10-months to 9 months and adds in a supplement equal to one month's pay.

The board also approved importing the following courses using the school system's distance learning technology: Spanish I and II, Algebra II and Algebra II with Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. The school will also export (teach to other schools) Advanced Placement English and Algebra I through distance learning.
