THS softball eliminated in second round The Thomasville High School Lady Tiger Softball team saw their hopes of winning a 4A State Championship dashed in the second round of the Sub-State Series this past Saturday, May, 10, when they lost two games to the St. James Lady Trojans. In both games, which were played on the road in Montgomery, it was the lack of offense by the Lady Tigers that ultimately proved to be the difference. The Lady Trojans scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in game one to break a 0 - 0 deadlock and then held on for a 2 - 0 win. Savannah Smith, who started on the mound for Thomasville was saddled with the loss despite pitching a good game herself. In six innings of work she allowed the two runs on five hits while striking out two. At the plate the Lady Tiger bats were almost silent with only a single by Andrianna Penn to show for their effort. In game two St. James jumped out to a 4 - 0 lead in the top of the first on their way to an 8 - 3 victory over the Lady Tigers. Once again it was Savannah Smith who suffered the loss on the mound for the Thomasville Ladies ending her season at 14 - 6. In seven innings she allowed eight runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out one. On offense the Lady Tigers stepped it up some picking up five hits this time. Leading the charge was Nicole Washington with two hits followed by Ashley Crawford, Brianna Penn and Savannah Smith with one hit apiece. In the extra-base hit category Crawford, Penn and Washington all recorded a double. As far as the RBIs are concerned Crawford, Penn and Natalie Washington drove in one run each. The Lady Tigers earned their way into the second round by taking two games from the Opp High School Lady Bobcats in round one of the Sub-State series on Tuesday, May 6. The games, which were played in Thomasville were the first two in a best two out of three series. In game one, which turned out to be a real pitching duel, the Thomasville Ladies scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim a 1 - 0 victory. Savannah Smith went the distance on the mound for Thomasville to pick up the win. In seven innings she limited the Lady Bobcats to three hits while striking out four. Over on offense the Lady Tigers collected three hits as well with Shelby Myers, Brianna Penn, and Savannah Smith producing one apiece. In the extra-base hit category Myers and Penn each slugged a double. Penn also had the only RBI in the game. There was a little more action in game two with the Lady Tiger offense pounding out 10 hits on their way to a 5 - 1 win. Leading the charge for Thomasville was; Shelby Myers, Andrianna Penn, and Nicole Washington with two hits each. Joining them with one hit were; Cassie Flint, Taylor Gilchrist, Lindsey Overstreet, and Savannah Smith. In the extra-base hit category Washington legged out a triple while Flint slugged a double. Washington was also the RBI leader with two followed by Ashley Crawford and Penn with one each. It was Savannah Smith picking up the win on the mound again as she allowed one run on three hits while striking out five in seven innings.
Although naturally disappointed at not being able to go all the way, the Lady Tigers of 2008 can take great pride in ending the year with a 22 - 8 record and advancing to the second round of the Sub-State playoff series. In the process they have continued a standard of excellence that the Lady Tiger teams in the future will be expected to immolate.
