The Thomasville High School Tigers ended their spring football practice on a positive note this past Friday, May 9, when the defeated the Southern Choctaw High School Indians 28 - 7 in their annual spring game. In the process they may also have answered some of their questions about depth in the game played on the turf of D. F. Anderson Field. And beginning the game with five projected offensive starters and one projected defensive starter sidelined due to injury, there were many questions to be answered.

In a post-game interview with Tiger Skipper Jack Hankins his evaluation of the Tigers' performance in the game and for that matter throughout the spring practices was favorable for the most part. "I felt like the overall performance by our kids was good on both sides of the ball," the Coach said. "That's not to say we didn't make mistakes because we had plenty. But most of them are correctable and that's about all you can ask. This is a good group of kids and their attitude and effort was very good all spring. We believe they can be a special group."

In the game the Tigers took control of the situation early. The Tiger defense shut the visiting Indians down on their first possession forcing a punt that carried to the Thomasville 35. From there the Tigers set sail on a 65 yard drive that was culminated by James Jones when he rumbled in from seven yards out. Cameron Dunegan added the extra-point and the Tigers led 7 - 0 with 6:21 remaining in the first quarter.

After shutting down the Indians on their second possession and forcing a punt that carried to the Thomasville 24, the Tigers were off and running again driving 76 yards to pay dirt. This time it was James White that took the honors scampering in from eight yards out. Cameron Dunegan was on the mark again with the extra- point and the Tigers led 14 - 0 with 8:46 remaining in the second period.

After the two teams exchanged punts on their next series, it was the Tiger defense that created opportunities for the Tiger offense to get on the scoreboard twice more before intermission. The first break came with 1:56 remaining in the second quarter when the Tiger defense came up with a fumble at the Southern Choctaw 17. From there James Jones picked up his second touchdown of the night rambling in from 17 yards out. Harrison Lewis tacked on the extra-point and the Thomasville lead stood at 21 - 0 with 1:09 remaining in the second period. Lightning struck again some eight seconds later when Mitchell Cowan intercepted an Indian pass at the Southern Choctaw 36 and returned it to the 30. From there the Tiger offense methodically pounded it in with James Jones plunging in from one yard out with :02 to play in the first half. Dunegan hammered his third extra-point through and the Tigers took a 28 - 0 lead to the locker room.

As it turned out that's all the Tigers would need as the Indians could only generate one score in over the final two periods when they scored on a 55 yard run with 7:54 to play in the fourth quarter. The extrapoint was good making the final 28 - 7. In the second half the fans at D. F. Anderson Field got to see a lot of new faces as the Tiger coaching staff began substituting freely from the beginning of the third quarter on.
