Courtney to run for District 5

Earlando Courtney
Earlando "Kookie" Courtney has qualified on July 2, to run for the Thomasville City Council District 5 seat. This district is currently represented by Alberta Dixon.

Courtney is the son of the late Dr. Ann West Davis and Charles Davis of Thomasville. He played football at the University of Alabama in the late 1980s. He later earned his Bachelor of Science degree in computational mathematics from St. Francis College in Brooklyn, N.Y. He is the father of two sons, Ahmad and Alexander.

"It is my belief that people should have the power of choice," Courtney said. "For the past two elections, this power has been non-existent due to a lack of candidacy. At the very least, I will give the people an alternative to the existing electorate. To not do so, does not coincide with the intention of the authors of our Constitution. It is not democratic to not have an election. The City Council of Thomasville has not had an election in eight years. It is time to give the people a voice that has been silenced for almost a decade," he said.

"Thomasville is a growing city and it is time to implement new ideas and changes for the present growth to continue. This growth that we are currently experiencing has not carried the majority of the population along with it. This growth should benefit all and not just a select few."

"We have to become more inclusive in our dealing with each other in all areas. We have to spread the wealth to all communities. I am very interested in creating a Thomasville youth council to give our youth a voice in the issues that concern them directly," he said. "In order to provide them with positive activities and get them off the streets; we must first listen to them to find out what it is that interests them. What interested me 25 years ago may or may not interest today's 17- year-old. Therefore, the only way I will know for sure is to ask today's 17-year-old."

"Lastly, we must make better use of our already existing resources. It is my dream that every commercial space house a thriving, tax-paying business from the vacant old shirt factory on the hill to the empty small boutiques downtown. We must become more creative and more aggressive in attracting new industry to our beautiful city. More industry means more jobs, which creates a better economy for all the citizens of Thomasville. This is the Thomasville I want to help create."
