T'ville budget proposal at $7.6 million

After rebooting its land swap deal, and opening up the process again to take bids from all comers, the city was left with one bidder to swap for the city's former landfill property; Jacques Prescott.

Council approved letting the mayor and city attorney finalize the land swap which would trade about 16 acres of city property at the landfill for just over three acres of land Prescott owns adjacent to the city industrial park.

Mayor Sheldon Day said the agreemet would be pending a clear title on all property and closing costs would be paid by Prescott.

The land swap, originally proposed by Prescott months ago, dragged on over the summer after it was discovered a third party was interested in the deal, but had contacted a council member instead of contacting city hall.

Council member Charles Allen asked what Prescott's plans for the property were, but he was rebuffed by Day and Prescott. The portion of the old landfill property that was actually a landfill cannot be used for development.

In other business, the city voted to declare the police tactical van surplus property and plans to donate it to the city school system. The high school band's equipment van broke down and a new one is needed. This will replace the equipment van.

Day reported that work putting a new water line in along Rural Road was progressing nicely, but that customers along that stretch could expect some outages as work progressed.

Day also presented a preliminary budget to the council. The budget's proposed total is $7.6 million. Day called it a very conservative budget that would have to do without some capitol improvement projects. A budget work session was scheduled for Sept. 29 at city hall and Day said he would meet with council members individually over the coming week to answer questions about the budget.

Alberta Dixon asked that funding be set aside to build a fenced in playground in the Choctaw Corner area. Dixon said she hoped to get three small playgrounds built in her district in the coming years.
