Summer library registration

Registration for the summer library program at the Thomasville Library will begin in May. The library will have programs for grades K-6 and grades 7-12. For more information call 334-636-5343, or stop by the library.

Electronic prizes

Family Security Credit Union's Relay for Life team is giving away three prizes. Grand prize is a Tom- Tom 130 GPS unit. Second prize is a Bose Sound Dock Station, and third prize is a Bose Sound Wave II Radio. Prizes will be given away at 9 p.m., Friday, May 8. Do not have to be present to win. Stop by the credit union's office on Highway 43 in Thomasville to see how to register.

Dinner, theater production

Dearly Departed, a southern comedy, will come to life on stage in Thomaston at 7:30 p.m., May 8 and 9 at the Rural Heritage Center. Reservations for the play or dinner-show package are available by calling 334-627-3388.

Kindergarten pre-registration

Sweet Water High School will hold kindergarten pre-registration from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Friday, May 8, in the kindergarten building. Children attending Heat Start must be registered by a parent or guardian.

Bake sale in Pine Hill

The Bank of Pine Hill Advisory Board will sponsor a Mother's Day bake sale at 9 a.m., Friday, May 9, in the lobby of the bank. Special orders are welcome and can be placed by calling 334-963- 4343. All proceeds will benefit the Town of Pine Hill Beautification Committee.

South Marengo VFD fish fry

South Marengo County Fire and Rescue Squad's Bi-Annual Fish Fry will be held May 9, at the squad hall, Coxheath Highway 10, Mile Marker 36. Plates will contain fish, hush puppies, baked beans, coleslaw and cake. The cost is $7 per plate. Visit the website at www.southmarengofr.org .

Annemanie May Day is Saturday

The granddaddy of all May Days will be held Saturday, May 9 in Annemanie. Come join the fun, music, softball, food and good fellowship. Booth prices are $200 each. No food booths. The event is sponsored by the Arlington Presbyterian Church.

Annemanie alumni

Annemanie High School alumni will meet at Annemanie May Day at 3:30 p.m., May 9 in Annemanie. All former graduates of Annemanie High School are urged to be present for the important meeting.

ATRC AAA public hearing

The Alabama-Tombigbee Regional Commission Area Agency on Aging will hold a hearing at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 12 at the Vanity Fair Community House, 324 Vanity Fair Park Drive in Jackson, to allow the public (and senior citizens in particular) an opportunity to comment on current AAA services. It also gives the public an opportunity to make suggestions for new or preferred services under the Older Americans Act of 1965 as amended in 2006.

Patsy Riley book signing

Alabama's First Lady, Patsy Riley, will visit Monroeville during the 2009 "To Kill a Mockingbird Play" season to meet with fellow Alabamians and to autograph her sough-after cookbook, "When the Dinner Bell Rings at the Governor's Mansion." Mrs. Riley will be at the old Courthouse Museum, on the courthouse square, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., May 14, signing books, which will also be on sale. Lions Club East- West All-Star game

Thomasville Lions Club will host the Alabama Lions East/West All-Stars baseball game at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 16, at Thomasville High School Tiger Field. Top players from 14 schools in a four county area will compete and go on to the next level to be played the following weekend in Brewton.

VFD fun-day

Opine-Tallahatta Springs VFD, Tallahatta Springs Road - County 44, will hold its third annual fundraiser from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., May 16. Bring lawn chairs and enjoy an evening of food, drinks, cakewalk, white elephant sale, giant slide for children and door prizes. Gospel singing fill feature the Dixie Disciples, Glory Road, Sounds of Joy and many more. A drawing for a 22 Ruger stainless steel automatic rifle (20-22 LR) will be held. Get a ticket from any O-TS VFD member.

Retired educators

The Clarke County Education Retirees Association will meet at 11:45 a.m., Thursday, May 21, at The Garden in Thomasville. This will be the last meeting for the current school year. All members, associate members, new members and interested persons are invited.

Town hall meetings

Community Action Agency of Baldwin, Escambia, Clarke, Monroe and Conecuh counties will be sponsoring a series of town hall meetings to address local concerns about how the economy is affecting the poor, disabled and elderly. Locally one of the meetings will be held at 10 a.m., May 28, at the nutrition center, 111 S. Church Street in Grove Hill.

NAACP meeting

The Clarke County NAACP will meet at 6 p.m., June 8. This meeting will finalize the Juneteenth Celebration activities.

History camp

The Monroe County Heritage Museums will sponsor the annual week-long History Adventure Camp for campers entering first grade through fifth grade. Monday through Thursday from 8 - 12 and Friday 8 - 2. The summer faculty makes history come alive with exciting field trips and interactive activities. Call 251- 575- 7433 for information. Space is limited. Cost for members is $40 and non-members is $55.

Hole Shot

The Thomasville Boating Association will host the 2009 Hole Shot on June 27 and 28. All proceeds will be going to the families of Ella Norris (Caleb and Tamara Norris) and Aubrey Armistead (Henry and Leanne Armistead) to help defray medical expenses. Ad space is available as follows: Name listing - less than $50; 1/4 page ad - $50; 1/2 page ad - $100; full page ad - $200; and full page ad and name on shirt - $1,000 and up. Healthcare scholarships

The Southwest Alabama Hospital Auxiliary is now accepting applications for scholarships for students who have been accepted in a healthcare field at an approved educational facility. Applications may be obtained from your school, or if not available, contact AWAMC Auxiliary Scholarship Committee, 1015 Tess Drive, Thomasville, AL 36784. All applications must be received by June 30.

Juneteenth

Southwest Alabama Improvement Association will sponsor a "Juneteenth Celebration" on Saturday June 20. Prayer breakfast will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Gloria's Pour House Cafe in Grove Hill. A tour of the Clarke County Museum, African American Exhibits, at Cobb-Jackson Street in Grove Hill will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. A picnic will follow from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Hudson Park. Guest speaker will be Congressman Artur Davis, candidate for governor of Alabama.

Low-cost food packages

Angel Food - a variety of monthly low-cost food packages including meats, fruits and vegetables, and prepackaged meals - is now available in the Thomasville area. Homeownership training meeting

Thomasville Revitalization and Community Development Corp. will host a monthly orientation meeting for the ongoing individual homeownership training program every first Thursday, at 7 p.m., upstairs at the old city hall. For more information contact Barbara Hudson at 334-636-0518.

Quilt Guild

New Beginnings Quilt Guild, Happy Hearts Quilt Guild and the Quilt Symposium of Alabama, Inc. will host a symposium "New Beginnings in Quilting - 2009," June 11-13, at St. Bernard Retreat Center, 1600 St. Bernard SE, Cullman, AL 35055.
