Annual BBQ

The town of Thomaston will hold its annual barbecue from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, March 13. Dinner is all-you-can-eat and served family style. Cost is $8.50 per person. Take-out plates are available. Barbecue will also be sold by the pound for $7.50. Call 334-627-3434 with any questions.

Beauty pageant

The Catfish Festival Beauty Pageant will be held March 13 at Millry High School for ages birth to 18 years. Entry fee is $40. Angel Food orders

Place orders for the March Angel Food boxes anytime through March 17 at the Bank of Pine Hill. Menus are available in Thomasville at all three offices of First United Security Bank. Retired teachers

The Clarke County Education Retirees Association will meet at 11:45 a.m., Thursday, March 18, at the Fish House in Jackson. This is an officer election month and all members are urged to attend.

Millry Catfish Festival

The Millry Catfish Festival will be held on March 20. Included will be kids events, horseshow tournament, antique cars on display, local entertainment featuring the band Strange Brew, arts and crafts, delicious catfish plates and more. Vendors welcome. Bookmobile

Be sure to stop by the bookmobile in front of town hall in Thomaston. The bookmobile is in town every other Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Upcoming dates include March 24.

Bunny Breakfast

The Thomasville Junior Woman’s Club will sponsor a Bunny Breakfast at People’s Corner at 8 a.m. and 8:45 a.m., Saturday, March 27. This event will be over just in time for the Youth Day parade. Come have breakfast and have pictures taken with the Easter Bunny (professional photographer on hand, pictures will be emailed). Limited seating for each session. Fiddlers convention

The 33rd annual Fiddlers Convention will be held Saturday, April 17 at the old Frankville school building in Frankville. The Chestang Family, a locally famous Bluegrass family gospel group, will kick things off at 5 p.m., followed by the show competition at 7 p.m. Competition categories for age 16 and under include fiddler, soloists and buck dance. Over 16 categories include: fiddler, band, vocal group, buck dance, banjo, soloist, flat top guitar and mandolin. A cake auction will be held and a full concession stand will be available featuring old fashion pit barbecue. The event is sponsored by the W.N. Reynolds Masonic Lodge #900. Admission is adults - $7 and student $4.

Jewelry sale

SWAMC Auxiliary will hold a Masquerade Jewelry sale 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, April 19 and Tuesday, April 20 at Thomasville Nursing Home. This is a perfect time to purchase gifts for Mother’s Day and graduation. Auxiliary appreciates the tremendous support they receive from the community.

Alabama Writers Symposium

Photography contest

The Grove Hill Arts Council will host its Fifth Annual Photography Contest on April 24. The special division this year will be “Gates of Clarke County,” with other categories including: people, pets, landscapes, flowers, architecture, wildlife, moments of time, computer altered and other. The objective is to promote photography in and around the county.

New paintings sought

The staff of The Grove Hill Cultural Arts Center is currently seeking new paintings to put on exhibit at the gallery at 124A Main Street. The next exhibit will be hung in conjunction with the Fifth Annual Photography in Your Own Backyard contest. The special category in the photo contest this year is “Gates of Clarke County” therefore paintings that incorporate gates will be given first priority.

Photography workshop

The Grove Hill Arts Council will present “Share Your Shutter Knowledge” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., March 20, at the Senior Center in Grove Hill. The goal of the workshop is to help understand cameras and teach basic photography concepts. The cost of the workshop is $30 per person and includes lunch. Cookbooks

The great cooks and employees of Family Security Credit Union have put together a cookbook filled with great recipes from north to south Alabama. All of the recipes were submitted by people who work everyday, so there are some good, quick recipes that can be prepared after a day at work. Cookbooks are available at FSCU branches in Thomasville and Pine Hill at a cost of $15 each. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

Don’t be a potty pooper

Ella’s Hope “Dream Team” is sponsoring a Potty Fund Raiser. A potty is placed on the lawn of area businesses or residents. A $20 donation is given to move the potty to another lawn. To give a donation, contact Mandi Snipes Jordan, Dream Team member at 334-994- 5988. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. T-shirts are available for a $15 donation.

Get fit!

The gym at the Pine Hill Mission is now open each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Equipment available includes treadmills, bikes, weights and various other types of exercise equipment. Also, literature is available to teach participants to get in shape and eat right. A one-time fee of $20 will be accepted to help with electric bills for the facility. No per-use fee is charged, but donations will be accepted.

ANON Meets
