Sarah Eleanor Lewis of Sweet Water died peacefully Monday, August 30, 2010 in Brent. She was born November 28, 1914 in Sweet Water.
She graduated from Alabama College (now University of Montevallo) in 1936. Her first teaching position was at Millport from 1936 until 1942 and then at Clanton from 1942 until 1948, when she returned to Sweet Water. She received her M.S. in 1960 from Livingston State Teachers College (now University of West Alabama), and Library Certification from University of Alabama.
She retired from Sweet Water High School in 1976, where she taught science and served as Librarian. Eleanor served as Director of the Girl Scout Camp at Double Oak Mountain for many summers.
She loved nature and enjoyed watching the birds from back porch window. She was a devoted servant to Sweet Water United Methodist church for many years and a life long member of Payne’s Chapel United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma honorary fraternity.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George J. Lewis and Laura Francis L. Boller, two brothers and five sisters.
Eleanor was a loving aunt to ten nieces and nephews. Maintaining the home place serving the needs of her family brought joy to her and those who loved her. She is survived by Margaret Ann Shotts Edmonds, Nancy Carolyn Lewis, Eleanor Ruth Shotts, Jane T. Lee, James G. Terrell, George L. Terrell, George P. Lewis, John J. Lewis, Jr., Lou Boller Bennett and John C. Boller.
Funeral services were held at Sweet Water United Methodist Church on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Ed Rose officiating. Interment was in the Sweet Water Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Sweet Water United Methodist Church in Sweet Water or South Marengo Rescue Squad in Sweet Water.
