He lived in Manilla, Ind. until retiring in 1988; then moved to Lasca residing there from 1988 to 2008. In 2008 he moved to Shelbyville, Ind. He worked at Knauf for 32 years and retired in 1988. He was a U. S. Army veteran serving during World War II in Normandy.
He was a member of Creel’s Chapel Methodist Church in Haltomville. He was also a member and past president of GBBA, an avid hunter and outdoorsman and he loved Alabama.
Visitation was held Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony- Ewing Chapel in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 17, 2010 at Creel’s Chapel Methodist Church in Haltomville. Interment will be at Forest Springs Cemetery.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Edith Marie (Davis) Smith; father and mother, Joseph Emerson and Vinnie Elizabeth (Webb) Smith; grandson, Sean Timothy Callahan; three brothers, Edgar, Agee and Bo; two great grandsons, Camden “Wink” Smothers and Cayden “Dink” Smothers.
He is survived by his son, Joe Smith of Lasca; two daughters, Sharon (Steve) Fansler of Shelbyville, Ind. and Rose (Brent) Callahan of Manilla, Ind.; four grandsons, Gary Gahimer, Joe Callahan, Kyle (Shelley) Callahan and Brad Callahan; four granddaughters, Christi (Rick) Smothers, Jennifer (Chris) Wainscott, Melissa Callahan and Amanda Callahan; eight great grandchildren, Kerigan, Caymen, Sean, Sophie, Edith, Henry, Kylan and Olivia.
