Gowan

William “Bill” Gowan, 102, passed away January 5, 2011 at his son’s home in Shorter. He was born June 7, 1908 in Birmingham.

Mr. Gowan served as a deacon for over 65 years. He taught the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Gideon Society. He was active in the community and professional organizations. He had a great love for his Lord, family and country.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 9, 2011 at Cubahatchie Baptist Church in Shorter with Dr. Mickey Castleberry and Rev. Chip Smith officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Ross Gowan; three brothers, Alvin Ross Gowan, Jr., Truett Coleman Gowan and Edward Paul Gowan; two sisters, Virginia Gowan and Josephie Gowan Ayers; first wife, Garnie Lou Polke; second wife, Mary Elizabeth Thomas and son, William Ross Gowan.

He is survived by his wife, Velma Gowan; three sons, John (Dorothy) Gowan, James (Kathy) Gowan and Thomas (Melanie) Gowan; grandchildren, Elizabeth Gowan, William Ross (Tonya) Gowan, Jr., Dawn Gowan, Jennifer ( Jeff) Minner, David Gowan, Melissa Cox, Rebekkah ( Clint) Shepherd, Allison Gowan, Jim (Christie) Gowan, Matt (Melissa) Gowan, Amanda (Adam) Pemberton and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ross Gowan, David Gowan, Matt Gowan, Adam Pemberton, Pierce Gowan, Tyler Gowan and Jim Gowan.
