Nicholas Phillip “Phil” Smelley, 80, of Whatley died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 at Monroe County Hospital. He was born August 20, 1931. He was a native of Coker. He was a Meter Technician with the City of Moss Point. He was a member of Amity Baptist Church and was a veteran of the US Army and the US Air Force.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Friday, November 4, 2011 at Amity Baptist Church in Whatley with Rev. Percy Clarke officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Smelley of Whatley; step-son, Tommy (Donna) Phillips of Whatley; step-daughter, Judy (Douglas) Clarke of Grove Hill; brothers, James Smelley and Nathan Smelley both of Moss Point, Miss.; sister, Virginia Matthews of Tuscaloosa; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Charles Hicks, Myron Gregory, John Salter, Joseph Salter, Daniel Clarke and Austin Roberts.
