Edward Olson Smyly, 91, a former shipyard burner at Grand Bay, died Aug. 7, 2012 at Lynwood Nursing Home in Mobile. A native of Magnolia, he was affectionately known as “Paw” and loved playing with his grandchildren. He believed in hard work, sharing his garden and helping others. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and a World War II, U.S. Coast Guard veteran.
His wife, Nellie Ray Smyly; parents, Virginia and Frank Smyly and 11 of 13 siblings preceded him in death.
Survivors include one son, Howard Smyly, two daughters, Dona (Riley) Glass and Margy (Glenn) Perkins, all of Grand Bay; one brother, Grant Smyly of Birmingham; six grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren.
The funeral was Aug. 10 at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Robbie Howard officiating. Burial was at County Line Baptist Church Cemetery in Arlington.
Active pallbearers were Frank Glass, Shann Smyly, Chad Perkins, Blake Perkins, Kyle Brannan and Konnor Brannan. Honorary pallbearer was Darryl Smyly.
