Bernice May Garrett, 99, of Grove Hill died at her home Tuesday, July 30, 2013. She was a long-time resident of Grove Hill and a widow of Theodore Watrous Garrett, Sr. Garrett was a member of a pioneer family of Clarke County, born at Salipta to the late Edmund Archie May and Lizzie Pitman May.
She was a Baptist, held life membership in the University of Montevallo Alumni Association and was a member of the Grove Hill Community Study Club.
At the time of her death, she was the oldest living member of Grove Hill Baptist Church. She and her late husband loved to travel, especially to University of Alabama football games. She loved politics, current events, literature and her azaleas.
She is survived by her son, Theodore Watrous Garrett, Jr. and his wife Claire of Cleveland, Texas and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and four sisters, Frankie (Mrs. William) Dickson, Ruth (Mrs. Woodie) Alston, Merle (Mrs. Webb) Chastain and Nell (Mrs. Ernest) McCorquodale. Special thanks to her caregivers Zelda Armstead, Mary Jackson, Carolyn Chapman, Rose Roper and Tameka Robinson.
Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 3 at Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill with Dr. Randy Boone of Grove Hill Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed at the Grove Hill Mathews Cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson directing.
Pallbearers were James Alston, II, James Alston, III, Woodie Alston, III, Ernest McCorquodale, Jr., Ernest McCorquodale, III, William McCorquodale and Stan Hutto.
