Wilbur Lainyer Newton, 65, of Grove Hill died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 at Jackson Medical Center. He was born Oct. 8, 1948 in Grove Hill. He was a retired millwright with McMillian Bloedel and a member of the Tompkins Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Edith Newton of Grove Hill; son, Keith (Heather) Newton of Grove Hill; two daughters, Jessica Newton (John) Odom of Citronelle and Crystal Newton (Josh) Boyett of Thomasville; mother, Leila Bell Newton of Grove Hill; three sisters, Elaine (Elma) Averett of Grove Hill, Lynn (Randy) Gates of Thomasville and Janet (Bill) Pierce of Grove Hill; a devoted caregiver and friend, Kelvin Chapman, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 10 at Tompkins Baptist Church with Rev. Johnny Kendrick and Rev. Don Newton officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery in Grove Hill with O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Thomasville directing.

Active pallbearers were Ward Edge, Charles Hickson, Nick Steadham, Thomas Armistead, Thomas Anderson and Marvin Anderson. Honorary pallbearers were co-workers of McMillian Bloedel/Weyerhaeuser, Inc., Shirley Hamilton, Sharon Reynolds, Kelvin Chapman, the staff of Jackson Home Health and the Clarke County High School Class of 1967.
