Downey

Wilbur Grayson Downey, 86, of Grove Hill, died March 13, 2014, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born to Julius and Mildred Downey on April 11, 1927 in Morvin.

He was a graduate of Thomasville High School. He joined the Navy during World War II and served on the USS Guadalupe. Downey was a civil engineer and land surveyor. During his career, he worked for the Alabama Department of Transportation, for both the Clarke County and Choctaw County commissions as county engineer, and was self-employed for many years, providing consulting engineering services for many of the municipalities in this area. He continued to work until his retirement at the age of eighty.

A longtime member of Tompkins Baptist Church, he served as deacon, senior adult Sunday school teacher, chairman of the building committee and overseer of the building of the present sanctuary and new fellowship building.

He enjoyed working in his hayfield, riding his tractor, tending to his cows and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his mother, his father, his brother Joseph “Joe” Downey and his sister Pauline Wilson. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Annie Lou Dumas Downey; daughters, Peggy (Don) Wright and Dianne Day, both of Grove Hill; six grandchildren, Heather (Chad) Davis of Tuscaloosa, Candice (Matt) Rouse of Leroy, Patrick (Julie) Wright, Danielle (John) Baggett, Leanne Wright and Joseph Day, all of Grove Hill; seven greatgrandchildren, Megan Baggett, Tyler Baggett, Ashley Rouse, Camilla Rouse, Victoria Rouse, Meredith Wright, and Elizabeth Wright; brother, Robert “Bobby” Downey and sister, Anita (Ken) Bush, both of Grove Hill.

Funeral services were Sunday, March 16 at Tompkins Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny Kendrick and Reverend Don Newton officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home directing.

Active pallbearers were Patrick Wright, Joseph Day, Tyler Baggett, Chad Davis, Matt Rouse and John Baggett. Honorary pallbearers were the Senior Adult Sunday School Class of Tompkins Baptist Church and faithful caregivers, Eddie Mae Cunningham, Francine Stewart, Janice Ezell, Katie Jones, Cynthia Wright, Lucille Brown and Sherita Foxx.

In lieu of flowers, the family request Memorials be made to Tompkins Baptist Church Building Fund, 14130 Highway 43, Grove Hill, AL 36451. An online guestbook may be signed at www.lathanfuneralhomes.com.
