Elsie Barnes Westry, a native and resident of McIntosh, was born Jan. 8, 1934 to the parentage of the late Rev. Evry Barnes and Mrs. Edna Adams Barnes. She departed this life May 17, 2014 at her home. She was 80 years old.

She received her formal education at Alabama State Teacher’s College in Montgomery. She was a member of Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, McIntosh, where she served faithfully as a missionary and an usher before failing health prevented her from doing so.

Westry enjoyed cooking and working in her flower garden. She retired after 30 years of dutiful employment with Searcy Hospital as supervisor of the culinary department.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Westry, Sr.; one sister, Lela Mae Barnes and four brothers, Evry Barnes, Jr., Roy Lee Barnes, Jerry Edward Barnes and Allen Barnes, Sr.

She will be forever cherished in the hearts of her loving family, three sons, Rev. Craig (Kathy) Westry of Saraland, Julian (Charmaine) Westry of Mobile and Chuckie Westry of McIntosh; stepson, Albert Westry, Jr. of Thomasville; two daughters, Nina (William) Adams of McIntosh and Archina (Jessie) Hall of Montgomery; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Westry of Thomasville and Sandra Westry of Vicksburg, Miss; five sisters, Annie B. (Llewellyn) Adams, Jocelyn Powell and Anna (Walter) Barnes, all of McIntosh and Delvin (Rogest) Carstaffin of Mobile; six brothers, Jerome Barnes, Winston (Mary) Barnes and Marvin Barnes, all of McIntosh, Rev. Namon (Wanda) Barnes of Citronelle, Mervin (Delores) Barnes and Elvin Barnes, both of Atlanta, Ga.; one aunt, Kate Adams of McIntosh; 14 grandchildren, 16 greatgrandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were May 24 at the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in McIntosh with Rev. Craig Westry officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with Andrews Funeral Home in Jackson directing.
