We are stricken by the news of a shooting at a “Sweet Sixteen” birthday party in the town of Dadeville, Alabama Saturday evening. Some of our Thomasville Tiger supporters remember going to Dadeville just last November 11, 2022, to cheer for our local football team in their playoff game.

Our prayers go out for those who were injured and those who lost loved ones and friends last Saturday night. There were four young people killed and at least 16 injured. One of those killed was an outstanding athlete who was to attend Jacksonville State University on a football scholarship. It was his sister’s birthday party.

Our distress is magnified because this is not an isolated event but just one of an ever increasing number of mass shootings that has intensified over the last three decades. What has happened to us, who is responsible, and what must we do to stop it?

There is not enough room in my little devotional column to quote it but Paul Harvey wrote and published an essay back in 1966 which he updated from time to time. He called it, “If I were the Devil.”

You can Google it by keying in the words “If I were the Devil by Paul Harvey,” in your search engine on your phone or computer. The last line says, “If I were the devil I’d just keep on doing what I’m doing.” Paul Harvey was right on in his prophetic essay but a late comer in prophesying about the rise of evil in the world.

The Bible foretold the sad truth a long time ago. When will we wake up and listen to God’s words of warning? Ephesians 5:14, 16-17. “This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

1 Peter 5:8 reminds us, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” We must give ourselves, our families, our schools, our Churches and our Country back to God.

Let’s give God all that He is due and I’ll see you in church.
