Historical Society to meet Jan. 29

The Clarke County Historical Society will meet Sunday, Jan. 29 at Grove Hill City Hall.

Sherman Keith Goodman of Coffeeville will present a history of Clarke County Training School. The school, in Coffeeville, was the first high school for African- American youth in Clarke County.

The school’s roots date to 1916 and by 1922 school buildings were in place named the Clarke County Training School.

Goodman and others researched the school’s history and a historical marker was erected at the site in December.

The meeting will be at 2:30 p.m. The public is invited.

You do not have to be a member of the historical society to attend.
